How to choose the right stake

To choose the right tree stake, consider the tree's size to determine the number of stakes needed-one for smaller trees and two or three for larger ones. Select a stake material that is durable, such as green garden stakes or fibreglass, and use ties that allow for some movement to strengthen the trunk.

  • For height: A 2.5m stake is suitable for trees up to 3.0m tall, while a 3.0m stake can be used for trees up to 3.5m,
  • For strength: For larger or taller trees, a thicker or longer stake may be required.
  • For flexibility: The stake should still allow some tree movement, which helps strengthen the trunk.
  • For tree ties: A tree tie with a spacer is recommended to prevent the trunk from rubbing against the stake.
  • For ground insertion: The stake should be inserted at least 40cm (16in) into soil for proper support, according to RHS.
